Matthias Loibner     english [pdf] deutsch [pdf]

profound hurdy-gurdy virtuoso,

has often been called „the Jimi Hendrix on the hurdy-gurdy“ for his expressive playing. However, he also has produced a debut recording of Joseph Haydn’s works for hurdy-gurdy (lira organizzata), has studied the xylophone music of Southern and Eastern Africa or felt the longing of the hurdy-gurdy man in Schubert’s Winterreise. In his very personal style of music the various emotions and styles often intermingle. For the love of the hurdy-gurdy Matthias Loibner stopped his academic studies of composition and conducting and in 1994 won the first prize at "Concours des vielles et cornemuses" in St. Chartier (France). Together with Riccardo Delfino he wrote the standard teaching manual for hurdy gurdy in German language and has been teaching in many countries in Europe (among others: Scola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland), in Japan and Australia.
A private recording of a little solo performance published on youtube attracted 200.000 viewers.
In Vienna Matthias Loibner has initiated a hurdy-gurdy festival in cooperation with the radio station/cultural house Ö1. In 2008 he launched the unique sound installation „The Time Project“, which brings together four European bands ((Snö, Mitsoura, Palyrria, Familha Artús) from East, West, North and South to overcome time and space.
